What to Ask a Budtender: 12 Questions That Get You a Better Buy
A dispensary is one of the few retail environments where the person behind the counter is expected to know the product in detail. Used well, that is a genuine advantage over buying online. Used badly, you get whatever is on promotion.
Here are the questions worth asking, roughly in the order you should ask them.
Start with what you actually want
1. "I want something for [evening / a walk / sleeping]. What would you point me at?"
Give the job, not a strain name. A budtender who hears the purpose can filter the menu; one who hears a name can only fetch it.
2. "What would you not sell me?"
An unusual question, and the most revealing one. Anyone who has used the stock knows which products come back, which ones are harsh, and which ones sit on the shelf for a reason.
Then get specific about the product
3. "When was this batch packaged?"
Freshness affects flavour and smoothness more than almost anything else on the label. A good shop knows.
4. "What's the total THC on this, and the total CBD?"
Total, not just THC. If the label only shows THC, ask about THCA and CBD so you know what you are buying. We explain why that distinction matters.
5. "What does it smell like, and what's the dominant terpene?"
Terpenes are a better guide to character than indica/sativa. If the answer is "it's a strong indica", ask again.
6. "Is this grown by you, or bought in?"
Neither answer is wrong. It tells you who is responsible for the cure and who you can ask about the batch.
7. "Do you have the lab results?"
In legal markets they should be available. A shop that can pull them up is a shop that knows its supply chain.
Ask about the practical bits
8. "What's the smallest amount I can buy of this?"
Almost always the right first purchase. Buying a gram to try beats buying an ounce to regret.
9. "How do people usually use this — how much counts as a dose for someone new?"
You want a range and a starting point, not a prescription. A budtender should tell you to start small and wait; if they tell you to smoke the whole joint, walk.
10. "What are your rules on returns?"
Some jurisdictions and some shops allow returns for defective products; many do not allow any. Knowing before you pay saves an argument later.
And the ones that protect you
11. "What are the possession limits here?"
They vary by state and province, and they apply to what you carry out of the shop. This is a question with a factual answer, so ask it.
12. "Is there anything about this product that isn't on the label?"
Occasionally the honest answer is "it's stronger than it reads", or "it's a bit dry this batch". That is worth more than any review.
Questions that rarely help
- "What's your strongest?" — that is a strength question, not a suitability question.
- "What's popular?" — popularity tells you about marketing, not about what suits you.
- "Is this good?" — you will get "yeah, it's great" from everyone.
How to use the answers
Ask two or three of these, not twelve. Then buy the smallest size, use it in the setting you bought it for, and note the result. Next visit, ask for something in the same family but different — that is how you build a personal map of what works.

General information, not medical advice. Cannabis is for adults 21 and over where it is legal. Rules on possession, purchase limits and returns differ by jurisdiction.
